The moment when two horses say hello is often an unpredictable one, with so many tiny imperceptible signals going between the pair that are hard to notice from our perspective. Sometimes, after a brief mutual sniff and touch, the horses gently turn away and stand with each other, quickly becoming buddies. Other times it may turn playful, while still others it can be an explosive outburst of squeals, spinning around, kicking, biting, etc. where one has offended the other in some way. Whenever I see horses meeting for the first time it feels like a charged moment, with the potential to result in a peaceful mutual acceptance, but with equal potential for a display of tension and assertions of dominance…
