Natural History Info:
Blue Orchard Bee - Osmia lignaria
At first glance this bee may look black, but in the sun it becomes iridescent green and blue. It is a Mason Bee, meaning that it builds its nests out of mud. It belongs to the Leafcutter family (Megachilidae). These are solitary bees that lay their eggs in hollow stems or holes in wood that they find. They are exceptionally effective pollinators, more efficient than European Honeybees! They are often used commercially to pollinate orchards of apples, almonds, cherries, and other fruit trees. Yay Mason Bees!
