Barred Owl Print (9" x 12")
This painting is inspired by an encounter I had with a Barred Owl when I was in high school. One day after school I was sitting on the back porch of my house, which was surrounded by woods. I heard a distant call, and I started mimicking it. Then I heard the sound coming closer. At the time I didn’t know that owls would come to investigate the calls of another owl (or human mimicking an owl), and pretty soon I could faintly hear its wings and saw it land on a branch less than 50 feet from me. It looked down at me and we made eye contact. Once it seemed to recognize that I was the one making the sound and another owl intruding on its territory, it flew away, leaving me marveling at the fact that I had just seen an owl up-close accidentally just by mimicking its sounds.
The reference photo for this painting is one that I took at the Western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville. The original painting was done in acrylics on a 12” x 16” canvas, and is not for sale.
